Fishing Report

Spring (Spawning Season)

Springtime fishing on Caddo Lake usually starts around mid to late February as the water warms up and usually lasts through Mid-May. The majority of bass on Caddo Lake spawn on cypress trees in the shallow water in normally 3 feet or less. These bass can be caught using weightless soft plastic stick baits or using creature style soft plastics, Texas rigged with a light weight. A quiet presentation to the base of the cypress trees is key to successfully catching spawning bass on Caddo Lake.

Summer

The summer bite usually lasts June through early September. Normally the bass are moving off of the cypress trees and into the vegetation. They can be caught on top waters, weightless soft plastic jerk baits, and very light Texas rigged straight tailed worms. As the vegetation gets thicker and thicker, this is a great time to have some giant blowups on frogs worked across the top of the vegetation. Summer is one of the best times to bring kids out fishing on Caddo Lake due to the large numbers of fish that are caught.

Fall / Early Winter

This usually lasts October through mid-January. As the water cools it triggers the bass to start feeding heavily on shad. With the best time usually being late November through early January. This time of the year has some of the best fishing that Caddo Lake has to offer. You can catch good numbers and size as the fish are feeding up for winter. These bass can be caught on lipless crankbaits, chatter baits, swimbaits, and weightless soft plastic jerk baits.

Crappie

Crappie can be caught year-round targeting brush tops, laydowns, stumps, and vegetation in the main river channel and also in Alligator Bayou. Minnows and jigs are the bait of choice to catch crappie on Caddo Lake. During the spring, crappie will move out to the cypress trees to spawn and can be caught on minnows and jigs fished around the base of the cypress trees.
